The Lovelies spend the month of July defining the work.
What is Compositional Improvisation? As our wonderful mentor Pamela Vail said recently, "Compositional Improvisation is composing dances in the moment." The Lovelies improvise dances with intention and meaning. It's not a meaning that gets pasted on top, but one that dynamically emerges from the relationships that are already there. We practice noticing those relationships, so we can compositionally and choreographically frame and reframe those connections to highlight the richness and lightness of the work. This month The Lovelies aim to keep clarifying what it is we do!
What is Compositional Improvisation? Compositional improvisation is often training for humility. A practice filled with paradoxes: embracing the unknown while acting with conviction. Radical acceptance of what's happening yet making space for what's next. Compositional improvisation is a constant practice of listening to ourselves and each other, making intentional choices in service of the greater picture/ piece at hand. The act of noticing and paying attention even when fear or feeling stuck may arise.
Now replace compositional improvisation and work with 'life'.
This work can serve as a metaphor for our lives both in and out of the studio. Voice, empathy, negotiation , community, risk taking, meaning making to name a few. Humbling indeed.
What is Compositional Improvisation? As The Lovelies strive to define what we do, we also are in constant dialogue about what each moment means to us on stage, how is the dance successful, or just asking ourselves "what happened?" This is the crux of what we are about and what we aim for every time we step into the studio or onto the "stage". We are trying to be open and present with ourselves, with each other, the space and what the dance needs! Of course what I may think what the dance needs and what another member may think is always in constant negotiation. Like Life! To get to the truth of what is happening and for the greater good of the dance or moment, listening and noticing are essential! Listen and notice more! Life will be sweeter and richer!
What is Compositional Improvisation? It's working with an ensemble--so everything and everyone around you--to uncover truth, beauty and meaning.
It's heartwork, art work & hard work.
It's negotiating with compassion. It's connecting versus competing.
And it's happening tomorrow night at Mark Morris Dance Center! Don't miss the opportunity to recognize that you are bubbling with aliveness and that you can create every moment of your life with beautiful risk, gratifying compromise and magnificent wonder.
Joanna is teaching the truth, beauty and meaning tomorrow/Tuesday at 8pm. We love living in the moment, but we look forward to seeing you there!
